Sprint Reviews: 6 Key Questions for Agile Leaders and Product Owners
Simple questions every agile leader need to ask
👋 Hey, Carlos here! Welcome to “The Holistic Leader”, your weekly source of simple and honest leadership, Agile, Management & team insights.
Sprint reviews aren't just about showing what’s done; they’re a key moment to make sure the team is moving in the right direction. Let’s look at six simple questions every Agile leader should ask during a Sprint review.
As an Agile leader and Product Owner, you know that Sprint reviews are more than just another scrum event, they’re a vital part of ensuring your team is aligned, learning, and growing. But to get the most out of these reviews, it’s important to ask the right questions.
Questions that don’t just focus on what’s been done, but on how it’s been done and what comes next.
That’s why I’ve put together these six simple but powerful questions. These questions help make the review clear, useful, and focused on what’s next.
1. What Was the Sprint Goal?
Start every Sprint review by talking about the Sprint Goal. This is the main thing the team was trying to achieve. Making sure everyone remembers the goal helps the team focus on what’s important.
key point:
Always connect the Sprint Goal to the bigger picture of what you’re trying to achieve with the product.
2. Did It Match the Bigger Product Vision?
It’s important to check if the Sprint Goal fits with the overall vision for the product. This helps the team see how their work contributes to the long-term plan.
key point:
Regularly check that each Sprint is helping to move the product in the right direction.
3. How Does This Help Us Understand and Get Good Feedback?
During the Sprint review, let people interact with the product. This makes it easier to get feedback that’s useful. The goal is to understand what users need and expect.
key point:
Show the product during reviews to get feedback that really helps.
4. Are We Using Different Perspectives to Make the Product Better?
Hearing from different people leads to new ideas. Use the Sprint review to gather different viewpoints from everyone involved. This can lead to better solutions.
key point:
Invite different voices to share their thoughts during Sprint reviews to make the product better.
5. How Well Did We Turn Challenges Into Growth?
Sprint reviews aren’t just about showing what was done during the sprint and what went well; they’re also about looking at what didn’t. (write down what the stakeholders and team says as feedback)
key point:
See challenges as chances to learn and improve, not just problems to fix for next sprint.
6. Are We Thinking About the Future?
Finish each Sprint review by thinking about what’s next. What did we learn? How can we do better in the next Sprint? This helps the team keep improving.
key point:
End each Sprint review with a plan for what’s next, based on what you’ve learned.
